Sometimes you have the question in the back of your head as to whether you’ll have a job – you simply have no idea what the future holds for you especially in the current economic atmosphere. You might be wondering if you’ll have a job next week. Add that to the regular pressures associated with work and that could mess with your morale or that of your coworkers.

You and your coworkers may find yourselves less motivated or less productive. You don’t want that – nor does your employer. There are some things that you can do to boost morale in your workplace and see your productivity increase.

Try these techniques to increase motivation in your workplace. Of course, yyou’ll know if these will work in your workplace or decide if something a bit different is more appropriate for your environment:

  1. Learn about and get to know your coworkers. Maybe you don’t really know your coworkers! Do you know them on a personal level or just as professionals? When you learn more about them, you learn about their values. You could discover what motivates them. It also makes them feel important.

* Recognize your coworkers’ birthdays. Birthday cake always lightens the mood. Your coworkers will be glad someone cares enough to acknowledge their special day.

* Ask about coworkers’ personal lives. Are they married? Do they have kids? What are their hobbies? These types of questions give you insights into their personal lives and let you know about them as individuals.

  1. Celebrate personal and professional accomplishments. You might be surprised how a coworker is motivated when they know their team acknowledges and rewards the hard work they’ve done.

* Write a personal note if they’ve done something particularly impressive in recognition of their hard work.

  1. Invite them out to lunch. You don’t have to leave the office if time is short; instead, order pizza or have something delivered. They’ll be able to relax and enjoy their work environment more when given a chance to socialize.
  2. Encourage interaction between coworkers. Work toward common goals together. Focus on collaboration and teamwork. How can you help?
  3. Be supportive. If you’re done with your work and someone needs help or support, is there something you can do? Find ways to contribute to the team.

Remember to value your coworkers, recognize their accomplishments, and work toward the same goals. A few changes can go a long way to improving the atmosphere in your workplace.

We don’t ever know what the future will bring. But even in unsure times, be sure to give coworkers the respect they deserve. Use these techniques to boost morale in the workplace and before you know it, your coworkers will have smiles on their faces and so will you!
